Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Udk returns to the Planetarium Berlin for a second edition of Portale to present a collaborative project between the UdK SoundS Master programme and the DSSA DCN programme of École Estienne de Paris. Portale 2024 will showcase an evening of immersive audio-visual artworks in full dome projection with 360° ambisonics sound. 13 works for frameless media by students from both institutions will repurpose the planetarium’s 23-metre-high dome, and make full use of the ten ZEISS VELVET video projectors, 49 speaker and 4 subwoofer soundsystem to create three-dimensional immersive artworks, from journeys into artificial worlds to generative explorations of colour, space and sound. The works screened at Portale 2024 will also be shown at the SOUS DÔME festival at Planetarium de la Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris in March 2025.

The event PORTALE, a collaboration between the Masters program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the UdK Berlin, the Stiftung Planetarium Berlin and the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut brings contemporary artistic practices to an iconic Berlin venue and opens up new worlds of immersive audio-visual experiences. Making full use of the 23-meter-high dome equipped with a multi-channel digital projection system as well as a full dome spatial sound system consisting of 49 speakers and four subwoofers, 15 artists present their works, from generative art to real time feed-back systems. These 13 works for frameless media alter and enhance the regular functioning of this theatrical space taking the spectator into various artistic contemplations.

The artists in conversation.

Presented Works

U E 2 revisits features from Unforeseen Events, a piece from the late 1980s that linked performance by brass or wind players to interactive software. The original music was developed in collaboration with Ben Neill and Rhys Chatham and was recorded for Phill Niblock’s XI record label. The new version is currently under construction.

ViewFinder grew out of Pools of Phase Locked Loops, a work for home-made analog synthesizers that was part of a commission to the Sonic Arts Union members (Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma and Behrman) from Hans Otte at Radio Bremen in the early 1970s. In its current form it can be realized by one or two players of acoustic instruments and one who operates software on a laptop.

The Royal Touch reanimates deceased and discarded electronic circuitry (cell phones, computer motherboards, etc.). Fishing weights make nudgeable contacts between a simple circuit of my design and the electronic corpse. Feedback between the live and the dead produces complex oscillations that change in response to the slightest movement of the contact points.

In Still Lives a modified CD player slowly scratches through ten measures of recorded music by Giuseppe Guami (1540–1611). As the CD steps from one skipping loop to the next the continuous counterpoint of the canzona is suspended in wobbly harmonic blocks, over which a player improvises. The text, from Vladimir Nabokov’s memoirs, addresses memory and mortality. This performance employs a software emulation of my beloved Sony DT66 Discman, which recently expired and has proven difficult to replace.

Nicolas Collins

New York born and raised, Nicolas Collins spent most of the 1990s in Europe, where he was Visiting Artistic Director of Stichting STEIM (Amsterdam), and a DAAD composer-in-residence in Berlin. An early adopter of microcomputers for live performance, Collins also makes use of homemade electronic circuitry and conventional acoustic instruments. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Leonardo Music Journalfrom 1997 – 2017, and since 1999 has been a Professor in the Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His book, Handmade Electronic Music – The Art of Hardware Hacking(Routledge), has influenced emerging electronic music worldwide.

David Behrman

David Behrman has been active as a composer and artist since the 1960s. Over the years he has made sound and multimedia installations as well as compositions for performance in concerts. Leapday Night, On the Other Ocean, Interspecies Smalltalk, Open Space with Brass andMy Dear Siegfried are among Behrman’s works for soloists and ensembles. Among his sound and multimedia installations is Cloud Music(a collaboration with Robert Watts and Bob Diamond.) Together with Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier and Gordon Mumma, he was a founding member of The Sonic Arts Union. He had a long association with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and worked with John Cage on a number of projects. In 2016 he held the Inge Otto composer’s fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin.

Matana Roberts

A dynamic saxophonist, composer, improviser, and mixed media sound artist, Matana Roberts’ artistic practice aims to celebrate the mystical roots and intuitive spirit-raising traditions of American creative expression in her artistic output . Her innovative work has forged new conceptual approaches to considering narrativity, history, and political expression within improvisatory structures and beyond.

The Ensemble Mosaik performs two works for instruments and loudspeaker, smoothly transitioning to various acousmatic pieces by Schneller, inter alia his piece Five Imaginary Spaces.

Die Reihe. Contributions to auditory art and culture presents the Swiss sound artist, musician and researcher Gilles Aubry with his piece “And who sees the mystery”, originaly published on the Berlin label Corvo Records in 2017.

The performance is based on sound check situations and rehearsals of Berber-Amazigh music recorded by Gilles Aubry in Morocco. Using his microphone as a sound processing device Aubry transforms further his field recordings through performative feedback techniques. The result is an abstract sonic exploration of traditional instruments, rhythms and spaces. It also features a poetic text in Amazigh language by Farid Zalhoud, “Tribute to the Ear”, commissioned especially for the project.

Aubry’s practice is based on a performative approach to field recording, documents and historical sources, often in collaboration with other disciplines. He critically addresses listening, sound practices, music, technology and environmental voices, examining their relations to power structures and ideologies in various contexts.

Beiträge zu auditiver Kunst und Kultur event during the Winter term 2017/18 and on the occasion of the Open Day of the Master’s program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts, presents the Japanese sound artist Seiji Morimoto with a performance and talk evening, showing his piece Sprite (2015) for multiple-feedback system and parametric speaker, at the University of the Arts Berlin at Lietzenburger Strasse 45 on January 13, 2018.

At the same Morimoto will also be showing his work Scopescapes (2017) at Spektral-Raumohr from January 12–14, 2018.

In co-operation with the DAAD Berlin, die Reihe. Contributions to auditory art and culture proudly presented the sound artist and musician Max Eastley, guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, and the choreographer and dancer Anna Huber (Valeska-Gert Guest Professor in 2008 and 2013) with the project AIR TRACES.

Where does movement end and sound start? Is it possible to hear silent gestures, what traces do they leave behind? When does a gesture in dance evolve into an instrumental gesture, how do they measure time and space? Max Eastley and Anna Huber are developing the project “Air Traces” together in a close process and will elaborate this open space starting from the casual, from self-invented instruments, from the specific site. Both leave their comfort zone and will explore the fragile and inspiring space in between.

For the first event of the die Reihe series this semester, we gladly present Thessia Machado with a sound installation and performance series telix at SomoS Gallery, Berlin.The installation features wall mounted, photo sensitive sound modules, conducted by light patterns from a graphic score traveling on a mechanical apparatus built from a deconstructed fax machine.

THESSIA MACHADO

is a sound artist and composer and currently an Inga Maren Otto Fellow in Music Composition. She performs electronic and electro-acoustic experimental music with hand-made and modified instruments under the artistic name link. She completed her BFA Summa Cum Laude at Hunter College, after beginning her studies in art at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro.

Machado finds the active, expressive potential in sculptures and interactive installations with a real-time, live component. “Working with sound reveals the air in which we all swim as yet another malleable and responsive material,” she writes. “It bounces and is deflected by space and objects, changing and acquiring a new character.”

Machado’s work has been exhibited in New York and Philadelphia, as well as in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Berlin, and Athens. She has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Experimental Television Center, and The Bronx Museum. She has been awarded numerous residencies, including at MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

SINE GREY is a collaboration between Martin Lorenz (composer / drummer) and Silva Reichwein (painter).

The music and the pictures are based on comparable theoretical-conceptual approaches. They are created independently of each other and do not stand in a reciprocal interpretative relationship. There are cognate compositional procedures and decisions that are made in a similar way as far as the complexity of the respective work processes is concerned.

SINE GREY is an audio-visual installation placing works in a dialogue with each other that are comparative in their analogous spatial arrangement and different in regard to the media employed, thus establishing a temporary, visual and acoustic encounter on different levels. SINE GREY is an experiment in which the works „Rotation“ (ML), „Oscillations“ (ML), „Telegon 30,31,32“ (SR) und „Stills (stop–play)“ (SR) raise questions pertaining to the way in which musical and pictorial concepts become visible and can relate to each other, and the moments when shifts in readability become noticeable and then increase to autonomous features or begin to level out.

Kaffe Matthews is DAAD Edgard Varèse Guestprofessor at the Audio Communication Group at the Technical University Berlin.

Kaffe Matthews, DAAD Edgard Varèse Visiting Professor at the Department of Audio Communication at TU Berlin, can be experienced on June 30 at ausland, Territory for experimental music, performance and art as part of a “Sonic Bike Event.” “Bicrophonic discoveries Berlin” is the name of her current art and research project, which deals with the mobility of sound and makes sound experienceable in relation to changing environmental spaces. Matthews, a sound artist and composer, conceives of the specially enhanced, sounding bicycles as musical instruments that enable sonic interventions in public spaces. Supported by musician and experimental sound designer Sukandar Kartadinata and participants of her seminar at the TU Berlin, she presents the current project status of her Berlin Sonic Bike creations.
