Sonic Psychogeography : Walking, Listening, Placemaking

Budhaditya Chattopadhyay

6 Feb 2024, 7pm

Lietzenburger Str. 45
10789 Berlin
3.OG, 315

The talk emerges from Chattopadhyay’s expansive practice with situated listening and psychogeography, manifested in their various projects over the years. The talk investigates how a sense of place is re-constructed in sound and audiovisual media works through the recording and mediation of site-specific sonic elements, such as environmental sounds. How engaging the mediated presence of a place becomes depends on the sensitivity and care with which artists and practitioners listen to the site by a psychogeographic approach, defying the cartographic quantification of place. Chattopadhyay discusses several sound-works, including a number of their own artworks to explore various positions of human agency and affordances in re-producing space and place in audiovisual media, and the artistic sensibilities for self-critic.

Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is a contemporary artist, researcher, and writer. Chattopadhyay produces works for large-scale installations and live performance addressing issues of environment and ecology, migration, race, and decoloniality. His works have been widely exhibited, performed, or presented across the globe. Chattopadhyay has an expansive body of scholarly publications in artistic research, media theory and aesthetics in leading peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of four books including The Nomadic Listener (2020), The Auditory Setting (2021), Between the Headphones (2021), and Sound Practices in the Global South (2022). Chattopadhyay holds a PhD in Artistic Research and Sound Studies from the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University, and is currently a Visiting Professor at the Critical Media Lab, Basel, Switzerland.
