The second die Reihe. Contributions to auditory art and culture event of the winter semester 2017/18 invited Martin Supper to speak about his work. On the occasion of his 70th birthday Prof. Dr. Martin Supper, founding director of the UNI.K | Studio für Klangkunst und Klangforschung of the Berlin University of the Arts and longtime head of the Sound Studies Master’s program, presented classic pieces of multi-channel audiotape music.

Among other pieces “Kontakte” (1958–60) by Karlheinz Stockhausen and “Tratto II” (1969) by Bernd Alois Zimmermann were performed on December 6, 2017 in the Georg-Neumann-Saal.

Karlheinz Stockhausen — Kontakte (1958)

Kontakte manifests Stockhausen’s concept of group-composition, in which serial compositional processes no longer lead into a “sporadic music” of singular isolated events, but organise the development or statistical static of sound events into higher form sections (“groups”). Stockhausen’s refined spacial composition rich with rotary movements, is especially impressive.

Bernd Alois Zimmermann — Tratto II (1970) for 4‑channel audiotape

In his piece Tratto II, Zimmermann immerses the listener with a four channel layering of sine tones, whose calm movement renders Zimmermann’s concept of time and space dilation — Zimmermann called this “the spherical gestalt of time” — experiencable.

We discussed the music-aesthetical explosive power of these compositions during this concert and talk evening. Martin Supper, who is renown as musicologist and composer of electroacoustic music and sound art, gave insight into his interpretation of these two most influential works of multi channel audiotape music of the late 1950’s.

In co-operation with the DAAD Berlin, die Reihe. Contributions to auditory art and culture proudly presented the sound artist and musician Max Eastley, guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, and the choreographer and dancer Anna Huber (Valeska-Gert Guest Professor in 2008 and 2013) with the project AIR TRACES.

Where does movement end and sound start? Is it possible to hear silent gestures, what traces do they leave behind? When does a gesture in dance evolve into an instrumental gesture, how do they measure time and space? Max Eastley and Anna Huber are developing the project “Air Traces” together in a close process and will elaborate this open space starting from the casual, from self-invented instruments, from the specific site. Both leave their comfort zone and will explore the fragile and inspiring space in between.

The last die Reihe. Beiträge zu auditiver Kunst und Kultur event of the summer semester 2017 presented the researcher and electronic music composer Diemo Schwarz and musician and sound engineer Alexis Baskin with the concert presentation “PLAYING THE SOUND SPACE (étude for corpus-based synthesis and gestural control 2015)” on July 6, 2017 at the Hybrid Lab Berlin.

Diemo Schwarz was DAAD Edgard Varèse guest professor at the Audio Communication Group at the Technical University Berlin.

Diemo Schwarz

Diemo Schwarz, born in Germany in 1969, is a researcher and developer at Ircam (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique-Musique, Paris), composer of electronic music, and musician on drums and laptop.

His research work includes improving interaction between musician and computer, and exploiting large masses of sound for interactive real-time sound synthesis, collaborating with composers such as Philippe Manoury, Dai Fujikura, Stefano Gervasoni, Pierre Jodlowski, Aaron Einbond, Sam Britton. He holds a PhD in computer science applied to music, awarded in 2004 for the development of a new method of corpus-based concatenative musical sound synthesis by unit selection from a large soundbase.

His compositions and live performances—under the name of his solo project Mean Time Between Failure, or improvising with musicians such as George Lewis, Evan Parker, Frédéric Blondy, Victoria Johnson, Etienne Brunet, Luka Juhart, Pierre-Alexander Tremblay—explore the possibilities of corpus-based concatenative synthesis to re-contextualise any sound source by rearranging sound units into a new musical framework using interactive navigation through a sound space.

Alexis Baskind

Alexis Baskind is a musician, sound engineer and author/consultant of technological solutions for audio production and listening systems. he first learned sound recording with benoit fabre au conservatoire national at aubervilliers/la-courneuve regional music school, and followed at the same time scientific and technical studies. he joined the ircam in 1999, and there he pursued researches on room acoustics. obtaining a phd in 2003, he has been working since then on music creation, theatre and dance projects, for numerous structures including ircam, the conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de paris, the campagnie des musiques à ouïr and the centre international de recherche musicale. among others, he worked with composers philippe leroux, andréa vigani, héctor parra, pedro amaral, françois paris, philippe hurel, vladimir tarnopolsky, alexandros markéas, hanspeter kyburz, as well as with the theatre director jean-françois peyret, in music, theatre and dance projects melting live electronics and traditional instruments. he works regularly on artistical and technical projects requiring the development of specific solutions for sound processing, sound design, and interfacing with gesture and visual analysis systems. formerly professor in sound engineering in the hochschule der populären künste fh (berlin), he’s been also regularly giving courses in sound engineering and computer music at the hochschule für musik detmold and in music schools, universities and training institutes for music production.

Our Summer Semester 2017 concert features a group of Sound Studies students performing a reinterpretation of “Kurzwellen”, a Stockhausen’s composition (1968) based on the peculiar sound characteristics of short-wave radios and “Appearance” by Toshi Ichiyanagi (1967).

Karl Heinz Stockhausen — Kurzwellen

A group of students of the MA Sound Studies perform a reinterpretation of ‘Kurzwellen’, Stockhausen’s composition dated 1968 and based on the peculiar sound characteristics of short-wave radios.Four musicians, each equipped with an instrument and a specifically designed short-wave simulator, engage in an intricate collective performance, imitating and transforming each others output in a process of improvised musical metamorphosis. At the same time a fifth performer takes care of the filtering and positioning of the sounds over 8 speakers, circularly disposed in the room.The improvisational character of the piece generates every time a new outcome, following the composers notation yet ultimately raising from the connections between the members of the ensemble.

Toshi Ichiyanagi — Appearance

For 3 Instruments, 2 Oscillators, 2 Ring Modulators

The Japanese composer Toshi Ichiyanagi played an important role in the New York avant-garde scene in the late 50s. He was connected to John Cage and considered as a “mentor” to the Fluxus movement. His piece “Appearance” (1967) is a composition for instruments, oscillators and ring modulators. It is representative for Ichiyanagis idea of “live-electronic-music” and based on an interactional structure for the players without leaving aside the factor of unpredictability. Since hearing is preferred to expressing by Ichiyanagi, improvisation has to be started with careful hearing of the space. Some freedom has been taken regarding the instrumentation. One of the major differences with the historical versions is that the ring modulators are emulated in a digital way thanks to a max-patch. Also, one of the versions will be played with a saxophone and a Shrutibox.

The piece will be performed twice, by two different groups with a slightly different instrumentation.

The exhibition «Sonic Noir: The Sonic Other» presents artistic works focusing on the iconic visual characteristics of film genre noir such as light/dark contrasts, shadows, camera-angles, leading to disorientation in the space etc., though transmitting them by means of sound. In order to find the answer, how noir sounds, artists can’t avoid using of concrete noir symbols and visual tools as well, but the atmosphere of suspense, threat, ambivalence, typical for noir genre, is metaphorically produced.

For the second event of die Reihe. Beiträge zu auditiver Kunst und Kultur this summer term, we gladly present the sound artist and composer Gerriet K. Sharma with “Composition of Sound Sculptures with the Ambisonics Instrument IKO”. On June 13, 2017, Sharma will showcase excerpts from the musical work that was composed for the IEM icosahedral loudspeaker (IKO) during his PhD period, investigating the usage of sound sculptures and their verbalization in electro-acoustic music composition along with the theoretical framework that was developed within the past 15 years of personal research.

For the first event of the die Reihe series this semester, we gladly present Thessia Machado with a sound installation and performance series telix at SomoS Gallery, Berlin.The installation features wall mounted, photo sensitive sound modules, conducted by light patterns from a graphic score traveling on a mechanical apparatus built from a deconstructed fax machine.

THESSIA MACHADO

is a sound artist and composer and currently an Inga Maren Otto Fellow in Music Composition. She performs electronic and electro-acoustic experimental music with hand-made and modified instruments under the artistic name link. She completed her BFA Summa Cum Laude at Hunter College, after beginning her studies in art at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro.

Machado finds the active, expressive potential in sculptures and interactive installations with a real-time, live component. “Working with sound reveals the air in which we all swim as yet another malleable and responsive material,” she writes. “It bounces and is deflected by space and objects, changing and acquiring a new character.”

Machado’s work has been exhibited in New York and Philadelphia, as well as in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Berlin, and Athens. She has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Experimental Television Center, and The Bronx Museum. She has been awarded numerous residencies, including at MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

For the third and last die Reihe event this semester, the composer, musicologist and media scientist Michael Harenberg meets the sound artist Frank Fiedler and the swiss clarinetist Ernesto Molinari on January 13, 2017 for a concert in the Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin.

The event will focus on Harenberg’s virtual instruments, which will be modulated, expanded and newly configured in collaboration with the percussive resonating bodies of Frank Fiedler and the sounds of the newly contrived double bass clarinet of Ernesto Molinari.

From this physical and virtual instrumental interlacing new forms of interplay and collaborative improvisation of sounds, structures and forms will arise, culminating in moments of amalgamation into one joint big instrument.

The event is part of the Berlin Interdisciplinary Workshop on Timbre, 12–13 January 2017

Michael Harenberg

Michael Harenberg is a composer, musicologist and media scientist and DAAD Edgard Varèse guest professor at the Audio Communication Group at the Technical University Berlin. His work focuses on digital sound culture, experimental interfaces, and compositional models of virtuality of the digital. He creates virtual instruments, stressing on their sounds but also on the aesthetics and new possibilities of musical expression. This also includes the bodies and actions of the musicians. How do they move the music and vice versa? What happens, when the relationship between sound, structure, body and performance is no longer predetermined but open to the unobstructed decisions of the players?

Frank Fiedler

The sound artist Frank Fiedler teaches percussion at the Freie Musikschule Berlin and is part of various ensembles and interdisciplinary projects. In his music he focuses on the interface between archaic or ritual sound-things and the free play of the insisting sound explorer who is lost in thought: a fool in the resonance between sounding and doing.

Ernesto Molinari

The swiss clarinetist Ernesto Molinari is presently a professor for clarinet at the HKB (College of Arts) in Bern, Switzerland, and has also been teaching at the International Music Institute in Darmstadt and the Impuls Academy in Graz. He is an accomplished soloist on each of the instruments in the clarinet family and applies himself to the interpretation of classical, romantic, and contemporary woks as well as to Jazz and Improvisation with a fearless approach to playing.
