Distant Trains (Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof, 1984) and other works, Bill Fontana in conversation
Introduction by Julia Gerlach (Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD)
On June 1, Bill Fontana will be a guest at the Jazz Institute Berlin.
He is one of the American pioneers of sound art. In the 1970s, he began to transmit sounds live to other locations, creating “sound sculptures” or “sound bridges.” In Berlin in 1984, for “Distant Trains,” he played sounds from Cologne’s main train station in the wasteland behind the ruins of the Anhalter Bahnhof. The sound material from this now legendary work will now be heard again for the first time at the Berlin University of the Arts, along with excerpts from more recent pieces — the event is being held in coöperation with the DAAD’s Berliner Künstlerprogramm.
